History

Savage, Maryland has a rich history that is deeply intertwined with its origins as a mill town in the 18th century. It was founded in the late 18th century by Scotsman John Savage, who established a textile mill along the banks of the Little Patuxent River. The mill, known as Savage Mill, became the cornerstone of the community’s economy and growth. The surrounding area was primarily agricultural, with farms supplying goods to the mill and its workers. ​​Today, many of the original buildings and structures have been preserved, giving the area a quaint and charming atmosphere.

Savage, Maryland, is a small, historic community located in Howard County, Maryland, about 20 miles southwest of Baltimore and about 18 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. 

Transportation

Savage is conveniently located near major transportation routes, including Interstate 95 and the MARC commuter rail station, making it easy for residents to commute to nearby cities.

Despite its small size, Savage offers a range of amenities for residents, including parks, trails, community centers, and local shops and restaurants. The Savage Mill Historic District is a popular destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Community Organizations & Events

The Savage Community Organization is a civic organization that has been around for over 40 years, serving the community and giving a voice to the historic region of Howard County. Savage puts on an annual event called Savage Fest. Now in its 35th year, Savage Fest celebrates the spirit of Savage Days from the 1920s, capturing the spirit of the community with neighbors and visitors, including live music, unique crafts, and historical walks. 

Outdoor Recreation

The Howard County area has a number of parks, lakes, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Savage Park, located nearby, offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and sports fields for residents to enjoy.

Education 

Howard County is renowned for its excellent public school system, and Savage is served by schools that consistently rank among the best in the state. Families with school-aged children often prioritize this aspect when choosing a home in the area.
